How I Got Involved with the Marshall Community

Of the many benefits of being a member of the Marshall community, one of the most significant is that there are a variety of different clubs and organizations that students can join. When I was a freshman, I did not immediately join any Marshall clubs or organizations since I was unsure what I was interested in, but also I felt a bit overwhelmed because there are so many opportunities to get involved. Looking back, that is one of my biggest regrets! I wish I had been more adventurous and less cautious from the very beginning of my time here at USC.

During the Fall semester of my sophomore year, I became part of Marshall Business Student Government, which I believe is one of the best choices I have made thus far as a college student. I have met some of my best friends because of MBSG, and have also had the opportunity to become involved from a “behind-the-scenes” perspective with numerous signature Marshall events and programs, as well as work closely with Marshall faculty and staff.

But, I have found that I have also developed professionally and personally through MBSG. One of the events MBSG hosts that is sponsored by Boeing is called, “Breaking the Boundaries of Business”, a week-long event in which each day is a different theme, such as “Silicon Beach Startups” and “Sports Business”. My job was planning the “Entertainment Night” event, which was centered around business in the entertainment industry. Although I had planned events in the past, it was one of my first through MBSG, so I was a bit nervous and wanted to make sure everything ran smoothly. From arranging a guest speaker to advertising the event, it emphasized to me that there are always unexpected challenges and issues that arise no matter how much someone may plan ahead or try to prevent anything from going wrong. However, it was also one of the most rewarding experiences I have had at USC to see everything come together at the end.

Even though It can seem intimidating at first, not only will a Marshall student make new friends, work with amazing staff and faculty, and find his or her interests by becoming involved with the Marshall community, he or she will also gain invaluable character-building experiences. Personally, I am beyond excited to continue my involvement with MBSG and can not wait for what the future holds!
