My Favorite Marshall Professor…
Now in my third semester here at USC, I have had a handful of great Marshall professors, but one seems to stand out the most to me. My favorite Marshall professor has to be Professor Julie Suh for BUAD 280, Financial Accounting. Coming into USC, I had zero intention of wanting to go into accounting, and had the stigmas associating accounting with desk life and boring numbers clouding my perception. However, after 3 months of listening to Prof. Suh teaching about accounting in ways that have actually made me have fun in her class, I have become one of the victims of her notorious ability to convince her students to consider pursuing a career in accounting.
Professor Suh really cares. You can tell that she cares about the material and whether or not we understand what is going on, constantly embedding accounting lessons into everyday life scenarios that are for sure going to make you laugh. Her Pavlovian style of teaching constantly reminds her students that indeed, there are real life applications, some of which may not end up well for those associated parties. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS! She is always down to chat about whatever you want, whether it be career advice, favorite places to get vegan food, or how her experiences were as a yoga instructor. If you want to learn to love accounting, I say you should reserve a seat in her class whenever you see one open.
In fact, the demand for having Prof. Suh is so high that her two sections of BUAD 281, Managerial Accounting, filled up before I even had the chance to register. There is no doubt that I will still try to get into her class, though. I don’t think I would understand and enjoy accounting as much as I do if it weren’t for her.
